Magdalena Egger takes her first EC-victory on the Streif
Magdalena Egger celebrates her first European Cup victory on Sunday - on the world-famous Streif. Just like on the previous day, the second Super-G also remained firmly in Austrian hands.
Austrian Magdalena Egger celebrated her first victory in the European Cup on the biggest stage of ski racing: She skied the famous Streif in Kitzbühel faster than anyone else. After her fabulous run, she said: “It's really cool here, it’s a fantastic day, I'm so happy.”
The 24-year-old finished seven hundredths of a second ahead of her Austrian team mate Victoria Olivier. The all-Austrian podium was completed by the previous day's winner Nadine Fest, who had her difficulties in her second Streif-show: In contrast to her flawless winning run on Saturday, a few slip-ups in the first part of the course cost her another victory. In the overall European Cup and Super-G rankings, however, the athlete from Carinthia remains well ahead.
Local hero Valentina Rings-Wanner finished in 31st place, 2.47 seconds behind - and was able to improve a lot compared to the previous day.
The athletes raced in glorious sunshine on Sunday - spectators cheered them on along the course and they were greeted by their family and friends at the finish. Ski fans were not only able to watch the race on site - ORF Sport + broadcast the Super-G live and brought a World Cup feeling to the broadcast with established alpine skiing commentator Thomas König.
Much greater than the individual victories and individual successes, however, is the overall performance of the women's ski racers: The women showed on Saturday and Sunday that they can conquer the Streif. It has been over 60 years since women's races were held in Kitzbühel. With the idea of holding a European Cup race for women in Kitzbühel, the President of the Kitzbühel Ski Club, Dr. Michael Huber, gave the women a stage on which they could prove themselves - with success.
The participants showed terrific skiing, stayed low in Schuss-position even in the key passages and made fine turns down the steep slope. ÖSV Alpine Director Herbert Mandl was impressed by the athletes' performance: “The ladies did a great job.”
